Today's topic is school 📚

During my visit, it was school holidays. On a Friday, I waited in vain at 1 pm for the throng of children who usually arrive for lunch. After waiting for an hour, I gave up and went home with a doggy bag.

Our little ones waited patiently for the others – without crying or throwing a tantrum. At 3 pm, the moment finally arrived: everyone came back, very hungry, and devoured their lunch. If the teachers here decide that school will be two hours longer before the holidays, then that's just how it is. 😄

Boarding school and additional support

Our eldest son has been attending a boarding school since July, which is about a five-hour drive away. Because his academic performance isn't yet where it should be, he wasn't allowed to spend the holidays at home. Instead, he's receiving extra tutoring to help him catch up.

This also means, of course, that we won't see him again until the December holidays. While there is a visiting day roughly every one to two months, much more contact isn't possible due to the great distance.

A school that takes individual needs into account

During my stay, I also had the opportunity to visit a special school for one of our children. Due to health needs, this child requires a different form of educational support and guidance. It is therefore all the more important for us to find a school that can cater to their individual needs. I was particularly impressed by how the school year is structured there for children with diverse abilities.

There is essentially a primary school with three levels, which children can complete within a maximum of six years. Those who are ready for secondary school at the age of twelve attend three further classes there.

It's not just about academic knowledge. The children also learn very practical things for their everyday lives and their future independence, for example:

• Preparing simple dishes, such as peeling potatoes and making fries.

• sewing and ironing

• Making necklaces

• the use of the computer

There is still a place available for our child, and we have the option of a three-week trial period. Afterwards, both we and the school can decide whether to continue with this arrangement.

Another challenge is transportation; we need to gather more information about that. First, however, a medical assessment is necessary, as the school requires up-to-date information.

We are excited to see how this opportunity develops. Finding the right path for each child and fostering their individual abilities is particularly important to us.
